Etherische olie, sandelhout is een boom met aromatisch hout en wortels afkomstig uit India en Indonesië. Sandelhout is onlosmakelijk verbonden met zijn geboorteland India, waar het wordt verwerkt tot wierook, geurig houtsnijwerk en etherische olie; authentieke, pure sandelhoutolie wordt verhandeld op overheidsveilingen. Naast Indonesië produceert India 90% van de wereldproductie van sandelhout, voornamelijk in de staten Karnataka en Tamilnadu; het oliegehalte van sandelhout is ongeveer 4% in het kernhout en ongeveer 6% in de wortels. Sandelhout is een waardevolle grondstof voor parfumerie.
