The Austrian playwright, novelist, and poet Thomas Bernhard (1931-89) is acknowledged as among the major writers of our times. At once pessimistic and exhilarating, Bernhard's work depicts the corruption of the modern world, the dynamics of totalitarianism, and the interplay of reality and appearance. In this stunning translation of The Voice Imitator, Bernhard gives us one of his most darkly comic works. A series of parable-like anecdotes--some drawn from newspaper reports, some from conversation, some from hearsay--this satire is both subtle and acerbic. What initially appear to be quaint little stories inevitably indict the sterility and callousness of modern life, not just in urban centers but everywhere. Bernhard presents an ordinary world careening into absurdity and disaster. Politicians, professionals, tourists, civil servants--the usual victims of Bernhard's inspired misanthropy--succumb one after another to madness, mishap, or suicide. The shortest piece, titled Mail, illustrates the anonymity and alienation that have become standard in contemporary society: For years after our mother's death, the Post Office still delivered letters that were addressed to her. The Post Office had taken no notice of her death. In his disarming, sometimes hilarious style, Bernhard delivers a lethal punch with every anecdote. George Steiner has connected Bernhard to the great constellation of Kafka, Musil, and Broch, and John Updike has compared him to Grass, Handke, and Weiss. The Voice Imitator reminds us that Thomas Bernhard remains the most caustic satirist of our age.Binding Type: Paperback

All eyes on you!

I didn't love this wig straight out of the box but after trimming the wig to frame my face and brushing out the curls (I love big hair), I absolutely fell in love with this unit. I've received so many compliments. Wig does tangle but after applying product the curl pattern returns. Will definitely purchase again!

Kitty is Innocent!
**** I will not be discussing plot points or including spoilers in this review. The Killers (1946 and 1964) is a Criterion Collection ‘double feature’ consisting of both theatrical versions of Ernest Hemingway’s short story. The 1946 film is the superior one, in my opinion. Featuring an ensemble cast including Ava Gardner and Burt Lancaster, it has all of the classic ingredients of a great noir film:
• well-written screenplay
• memorable femme fatale
• believable, shady villains
• investigating a crime
• hardboiled
• effective flashback scenes
• plot twists and turns
Director Robert Siodmak meshes these attributes to perfection in one of the greatest noirs to ever hit the silver screen. Ava Gardner as Kitty Collins is icing on the cake, as her character is one of the most iconic femme fatales in noir history. She’s so dangerous! The Criterion Collection blu ray is a must-have, with both film versions in high quality, and some very neat special features. I’m so glad that they included the 1964 film on this blu ray. Sit back, relax, and enjoy The Killers in the way they were meant to be viewed!

2 for 1!
Two iterations of an Ernest Hemingway classic short story. Burt Lancaster kicks it off with the 1946 version followed by the Lee Marvin led 1964 version. Both are great and plenty of criterion extras making this among my favorite spine in their awesome collection. There’s also a Russian student take on the short story adding a third version of a great story. Highly recommended and if it’s 50% a must buy. I already owned it and gave this as a gift who instantly called me two days later with high praise of the films.
