Know the Awesome Lord God by His Immutable TraitsKnow the Awesome Lord God by His Immutable Traits discusses who God is and how we know Him by His enduring traits. God identifies Himself in His word as Creator, the one who called all things into being, and that is how we know Him. He portrays Himself as the lover of mankind and does so through the eternal sacrifice He made by giving His Son Jesus to save the world. God portrays Himself as faithful, as He does so by making Himself readily available

Know the Awesome Lord God by His Immutable Traits discusses who God is and how we know Him by His enduring traits. God identifies Himself in His word as Creator, the one who called all things into being, and that is how we know Him. He portrays Himself as the lover of mankind and does so through the eternal sacrifice He made by giving His Son Jesus to save the world. God portrays Himself as faithful, as He does so by making Himself readily available to all who call on His great Name. God distinguishes Himself as God through His many immutable traits; and what this book makes clear is that those who name His name take on His attributes and are also known by how they are like Him and are also known and can be identified by them.

About the Author

Elisabeth James grew up for a short time with her maternal grandparents, Jesse and Lucille Johnson, in her birthplace of Holly Hill, South Carolina.  They took her to church regularly. There she was introduced to faith in God and His Son, the Lord Jesus Christ. That experience planted the seed of faith in her, which she has pursued throughout her life. There also, she learned to love the outdoors and nature, and later in life began to respect it as the Creation and handiwork of God.

At age seven, James joined her parents in Miami, Florida, where she enjoyed the outdoors just as much as she had in South Carolina and often explored the beaches of the area and the tropical foliage that grew all around.

When it became time to pursue a career, she began by studying journalism at Howard University in Washington, D.C. In 1977,  James earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Journalism. Ten years later, she began work on a Masters degree in English at Jackson State University in Jackson, MS, and earned that degree in 1987; while at Jacckson State, she worked for and was mentored by author Margaret Walker Alexander.  During that period, she began work on the PhD in English at The University of Mississippi, where she studied under John Grisham and Barry Hannah, and in 1997, earned the PhD. James received the MFA in creative writing in 2013 from Florida Atlantic University after working with Grisham and Hanna. Also, she enjoyed a twenty-one year career as an educator at various American institutions of higher learning.

Great story and illustrations!
I purchased this book as a Christmas present for my toddler nephew and it became his favorite new book of the year! I had read the story randomly in a store some years ago as the title, awards, and cover illustration caught my eye. Growing up as a 90s kid, I cannot recall being exposed to a variety of diverse books especially ones that take place in the city and Last Stop on Market Street stuck with me. It depicts the city life well, how for some the only transportation is the bus, and the value of community by giving your time to help and connect with others. The illustrations are beautifully done and the story captures both CJ's imaginations and observations wells. My brother especially loved how wise CJ's grandmother is as she guides him during their journey and teaches him at a young age how to help those in need.

A beautifully written and illustrated story about a young boy and his Nana and their loving spirit they share with others
Format: Hardcover
This is a simple, but beautiful story with heart. It is told by a little boy who apparently lives with his Nana. The illustrations are scenes painted in brilliant colors. C.J., the boy has many questions to ask his Nana, like why they have to ride the bus or always to do the same thing every Sunday? Nana patiently and gently answers every question and helps C.J. to open his eyes and his mind to the beauty around him. This book teachers children compassion and to look for good and beauty in people and their surroundings. It models empathy for those who have less than one has. Nana has a lovely spirit and great wisdom. She makes one feel that she is a lady one would like to know. Nana teaches the joy of giving back to others. This is a book I will read again and again.

Wonderful depiction of the city & finding gratitude
Format: Hardcover
I bought this book after moving my young family from SF to a very homogeneous suburb. Rode MUNI with my kids & at the time didn’t realize how diversity is taught passively when it’s all around you. Fast forward, my kiddo makes a comment in preschool that shocks me & realize that she’s now in such a bubble. This book is clearly nostalgic for me, but for my kids it’s a chance to talk about all the different lives people live. A chance to talk about race, culture, homelessness, privilege (riding the bus instead of a car, not having a music player), people with disabilities, etc. To those who choose to post about the grammar In this book, good authors work very hard on depicting dialects, which are 100% a part of one’s culture. Take the opportunity to discuss the diversity that exists in language too. My goodness, white people from Boston add & delete Rs like crazy (Cubar instead of Cuba, ca’ instead of car). 🙃
