Review of In The Meeting by Marjorie Gelb Jones. Reviewed by D. Kilgallen

Think nothing eventful happens in Quaker Meeting Houses? Think again!

“In The Meeting” is the third installment of the Frances Yates mystery series by Marjorie Gelb Jones, the noted biographer and educator. Some years ago, Ms. Jones wrote the definitive biography of Frances Yates, a British historian, scholar and leading expert on the Renaissance. Yates gained fame with her study of the Hermetic Tradition and the life of Giordano Bruno, a Catholic priest who was burned at the stake by the Inquisition in 1600 for his heretical theology. Yates’ book, “Giordano Bruno and the Hermetic Tradition,” published in 1964, is the seminal work on the topic. Yates worked and studied at the Warburg Institute in London. She died in 1981.

In the Frances Yates mystery series, Ms. Jones brings the historical Yates back to life in the current era as a fictional sleuth-scholar with a yen for travel. “In The Meeting,” Dame Frances investigates the mysterious death of the caretaker of a Quaker meeting house. Along the way, Ms. Jones takes us on a delightful tour of cultural Philadelphia and its many iconic landmarks. We are also treated to Ms. Jones’ characteristically lush descriptions of food, clothing and décor, and her use of the narrative to spotlight the achievements of great women, the power of feminism and the presence of the Great Mother.

Dame Frances, the sleuth, does not seek out crimes to solve but they seem to cross her path wherever she travels. The death in the Meeting’s library is the lever that opens the door to exposing a network of thieves that is purloining valuable books and artifacts from Philadelphia's historic museums and churches. Yates’ clever detective work is understated, more thought than action, but highly successful.

In the end, of course, the criminal network is destroyed, the death of the poor caretaker is solved, and justice is done. It’s an enjoyable ride from start to finish, and especially so for readers of the first two Yates mysteries as the lives and personalities of Dame Frances and the recurring characters are further developed. Don’t hesitate to pick up (or download) a copy of “In The Meeting.” You won’t be disappointed!

Unpacks Nazi rhetoric & makes it relevant to today
Format: Kindle
Ron Chernow’s best book ... unpacks Nazi rhetoric and makes it relevant to today. While I read his other books, honestly this book was far more impactful. I realized how little I knew about specific families and citizens in Germany during the rise of the Third Reich. While the Warburg family was extremely wealthy and atypical, they were very savvy yet still were very aligned to country which caused them to underestimate what was happening in Germany. I love to read about US leaders, but by reading this, realized I need to get out of US history and into global history. Also, while the Warburg brothers were the main focus, I appreciated focus and development of the important woman in the narrative.

A Comprehensive Framework for Tackling Complexity with Confidence
Format: Kindle
Strategic Problem Solving is a powerhouse of a guide for anyone navigating today’s fast-paced, high-stakes business environment—or just dealing with tough challenges in general. Mark Hartley distills years of expertise into an actionable, easy-to-follow framework that makes complex decision-making feel manageable. The seven-step framework is the star of this book, offering a logical, systematic approach to breaking down big problems and creating solutions that stick. Each chapter walks readers through a specific phase of problem-solving, from defining the problem with precision to communicating and implementing solutions with clarity and impact. This isn’t just theory—every concept is illustrated with real-world examples, case studies, and practical tools like flowcharts and work plans. What makes this book stand out is its versatility. It’s perfect for professionals like executives, consultants, and managers, but the ideas can also apply to personal challenges. The tools for critical thinking, prioritization, and creative innovation feel universally relevant. Hartley’s writing is clear and concise, making even complex strategies approachable. One of my favorite aspects is the emphasis on real-world application. For example, the chapter on disaggregating problems compares tackling a challenge to scaling a mountain, encouraging readers to “break the mountain into hills.” It’s practical advice that sticks, and the accompanying tools like mind maps and timelines make it easy to translate into action. This book is more than just a manual for solving business problems—it’s a mindset shift. It helps you think critically, lead confidently, and make smarter decisions. Whether you’re managing a team, driving innovation, or simply trying to up your problem-solving game, this guide will be an invaluable resource. Highly recommended for leaders, thinkers, and anyone striving to navigate complexity with skill and precision!

Mastering Strategic Problem Solving
Format: Kindle
This book offers a comprehensive approach to tackling complex challenges through a practical, step-by-step framework. It guides readers in defining and breaking down problems, prioritizing for impact, and implementing solutions effectively. A notable strength is its emphasis on real-world application, featuring case studies and examples from diverse industries that demonstrate the framework in action. The chapter "Disaggregate the Problem into Smaller Pieces," for example, introduces the concept of disaggregation by comparing a complex problem to a towering mountain that becomes manageable when broken into smaller hills. This vivid metaphor, coupled with examples like successful product launches, illustrates how breaking challenges into components reduces cognitive load and sharpens focus. Tools such as mind mapping and flowcharts are explained in detail, enabling readers to visualize relationships and streamline decision-making processes. Aimed at consultants and aspiring professionals, this guide equips readers with the mindset and techniques to solve problems strategically. While insightful and well-structured, its academic tone may appeal more to professionals than casual readers. Nonetheless, its clear methodology and actionable exercises make it an excellent resource for anyone seeking to enhance their decision-making skills.

A very good and helpful book
Format: Kindle
This book provides a well-structured, step-by-step approach to tackling challenges effectively. The book outlines a seven-step process, beginning with defining and identifying the problem, and then walks the reader through practical techniques like mind mapping, prioritization, and overcoming decision paralysis. Further, one of the book’s strengths is its wealth of real-world examples and case studies, which make the concepts tangible. The discussion on managing time in problem-solving, critical thinking, and addressing communication barriers is particularly insightful. Additionally, Heartly introduces useful frameworks such as the "inner matrix" and role mapping, which help in breaking down complex problems into manageable parts. While the content is valuable, the writing can feel a bit wordy, and some sections could flow more smoothly. The references are also quite small (in the ebook), making them a bit difficult to read. However, these are minor drawbacks in an otherwise solid guide. Overall, this book is a great resource for anyone looking to enhance their problem-solving skills, whether in business, leadership, or personal decision-making.This book offers a clear, seven-step approach to tackling challenges.
